That being said the lyrics are clearly metaphoric and difficult to decipher as to who the broken and torn pigeon is though it appears to be the vocalist as you were to “terrible to me” , however it later turns out that he was also “terrible to you”. I assume that “you” was the girlfriend leaving the tune a metaphor for a catastrophic relationship.
‘Sweat’ oozes, or more aptly sweats emotion with the repeated line “Honey I don’t think I can sweat this one out this time” backed by an acoustic guitar and vocal harmony that builds to produce a soothing melancholic atmosphere. Though in their previous single there were hints of Conor Oberst-esque cracking and breaking vocals; here the vocals are completely unique and have grown in credibility and one cannot but feel for this young man’s ode to a broken relationship that just won’t work however hard they try.
‘New Skin’ cements the vocal prowess of a band whose melancholic tendencies revolve around a profound depth of its’ aforementioned harmonies. It goes without saying that this EP has shown a huge growth in maturity both technically, musically and lyrically. With this track St. Spririt shows the direction it wishes to take musically and is a very encouraging taste of what is to become of their debut album (as yet untitled) which, having been engineered by the world-renowned Adrian Bushby (Muse, Foo Fighters) shows the high esteem within which the band is held in musical circles.
By track 4 ‘Tooth and Nail’ it’s fair to say that the job’s been done. St.Spirit has lived up to the expectations of its debut single and with the strength of musicianship on show here there is no doubt that their upcoming album will be nothing but a work of art.
