Letting Up Despite Great Faults’ latest release – EP ‘Paper Crush’ – pushes the new wave of genre Shoe-Gaze (aptly titled ‘Nu-Gaze’) into the new millennium’s second decade with six tracks of beautifully crafted somnolent electronica that leave attachments to early trailblazers such as M83 and The Radio Dept. in the past as the group carves out its own unique sound.

Opening track ‘repeating hearts’ sets the template for the EP with haunting, whispered vocals reminiscent of ‘Adore’-era Smashing Pumpkins threading through a soundscape of echoing digital simplicity.

‘sophia in gold’ has a more distinct melody and is more direct than the previous track whilst still cradling lighter than air vocals that by this stage give the impression of being an instrument in themselves rather than a separate entity. The lyrics almost become irrelevant in a production with that cannot be faulted with its melancholy, yet smiling surrealism and tender atmospherics.

‘teenage tide’ is upbeat and mildly melodic in the same way as ‘sophia in gold’ and beefed up with an over layering of fuzzed-out guitar licks present throughout, though where this band really shines is its ability to weave dreamscapes and saturate the senses.

‘i feel you happen’ is not of any great import while instrumental track ‘aurora’, despite measuring up well against its cohabitants seems a little unnecessary and although it could be said that the group is attempting to prove an ability to produce great material without the use of lyrics there is the feeling that this kind of track would be better at home on a long-player rather than taking up valuable space here.

‘helium’, being the terminal track does surprise with its ability to catch the listener’s attention beyond that of the others. Vocals come clearer as if weighted with more meaning than in the other tracks with the instruments playing second fiddle (no pun intended). This track is instrumentally similar to ‘teenage tide’, however the beat is more urgent as if time is running out. And so it is.

‘Paper Crush’ is a solid piece of artistry and as such should not go unnoticed by fans of the genre – its leftfield nature standing in the way of mass appeal – as previous work by Michael Lee and co. has been despite the cameo of ‘Disasters Are Okay’ on One Tree Hill and Passion Pit’s remix of ‘Little Secrets’ in 2009.

If history is to be repeated then a full length album should be in the offing in the not too distant future and here’s to hoping they garner the praise they are no doubt worthy of.
