Juan Zelada has had a colourful upbringing in Madrid a brief sojourn in Hong Kong and time in Liverpool (where he received an award from Sir Paul himself) before landing in London to make his musical name. He certainly has made an impression on the music scene with his debut solo being a beautifully sun kissed kick-your-knees up and relax - Jack Johnson/Jazon Mzax style.

To be fair his single was impressionable and he’s made a good start. Three singles have made it to Radio 2 record of the week slot and now the vaunted album of the week– not to be sniffed at if you dig into R2s recent talent spotting credentials.
Now signed to Decca, High Ceilings...and Collarbones will be hoefully bre his frist crackbi gitimecover as Juan’s first crack at stardom. Based on the evidence researched, the thirty year old Mr Zelada has been paying the dues of fine tuning through hard work and live performances, principally in the capital, before committing his work to vinyl/cd/the downloadable ether. That work has paid off as this is a very polished debut.

There are tunes to sing-a-long to (Barman and What do I Know) and songs with depth, such as the previously mentioned The boy with the TV on which came from an encounter in the foothills of Nepal according to Mr Zelada.

Give this album a go and you will find it a great companion for lazy days, commutes or driving. An unoffending listen, yes, but one with quality and, on occasions, a depth (The boy with the TV on) that will reward you when you least expect it. Pop music in other words. This pop is tainted with blues and on occasion reggae but both of the light variety. Mr Zelada says he is mainly influenced by American 70’s west coast rock and I suppose the laid back feel is the most tangible evidence of that, though I feel

There’s nothing too challenging here and yes for some it will be instantly forgettable but this is the staple stuff of good pop radio and trust me Juan Zelada will combine this excellent album with a reputation for exciting live performances and make 2012 a good year
