Of course he is. He blew the roof off.
In theory, one-man, instrumental act should not rock anybody’s world so thoroughly on a Thursday night, but somehow he managed it. There is something gloriously hypnotizing about Gold Panda’s sound that is irresistible on record and against all theories, is taken to a whole new level of emersion live.
Without word, Gold Panda comes onstage and starts his work, keeping his head down, twiddling nobs and dials while videos of spacious landscapes play out on the big screen behind him.
What happens, almost instantly, is a connection between crowd and artist that can only be mastered by the best instrumental music. The absence of lyrics allows the audience to create their own story. Gold Panda’s music is like an engaging blank canvas that is so easy to get lost in. It is an enlightening experience and in Camden KOKO this evening, fans and spectators are hanging mesmerized over the balconies, like obedient servants. The crowd in front of the stage look as if they are pulsating to the beat - some are swaying, some are dancing their tits off, others are standing stationary taking it all in. As soon as album opener and fan-favourite ‘You’ cuts in with its crisp, tinkering sample, everyone in the room is fully aware that Gold Panda is still a very, very big thing.
