Hey kids, not caring is the new Rock and Roll! At least it is in the eyes of Eight Legs front man Sam Jolly. Not since Kurt Cobain has a singer been as disinterested, bored, disconnected, and well, tetchy. These boys are young, pissed off, and talented. They make a racket that can be described as the Beatles in a bad mood, or the Kinks in anger management therapy. They bring us the album 'The Electric Kool-Aid Cuckoo Nest'; they're that mugged off they have to give it a crazy name.
Grumpiness aside, Eight Legs do indie punk and they do it well. There isn't much more to say, to copy from the style of front man Sam Jolly, there's no point going over the top or over stating things.
When a group of people as diverse as the members of ‘Subsource’ come together, you know they will be capable of great things. Their brand new single ‘The Ides’ is obvious proof of that. Made up of a British-Chinese Cambridge grad, a Norwegian born musical prodigy, a nu-skool double bassist and a DnB drummer, most people would have immediately dismissed the idea that this could be the making of an electronica band. Well, most people were very wrong.
Described by The Metro as a ‘cyberpunk riot’, it’s difficult for one to pin down a specific genre that the band falls into. It’s fairly evident from listening to their latest single that they don’t want to find themselves pigeon-holed or put into the same boat as every other electronica group this side of the
The single itself, ‘The Ides’, is an electronically crafted work of art. Vocals chillingly similar to that of The Prodigy front man Keith Flint along with the repetition of the spoken words ‘something sinister is rising on the horizon’ creates an ominous and prophetic tone for the entirety of the song.
Regardless of the song’s infectious melodies and futuristic synth parts, I find the structure of the song to be mismatched and puzzling; it is often difficult to determine when the chorus starts or the verse ends. Unfortunately, this makes for an, at times, tentative listen.
Despite this, I find Subsource to be dated and in a society that is consumed with chart-topping pop music, there is no place for them in the current musical climate. With quirky, acoustic-pop making a comeback this year, Subsource will certainly find it hard to keep their heads above water; while bands such as The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers are still around, it’s my view that they’ll always be regarded as ‘the band that sound like The Prodigy’.
Remember that ‘Know Your Limits’ advert where the floppy-haired indie boy rips his earring out and pees on his own shoes?
If you answered yes, then you know of Eight Legs already.
