Auction For The Promise Club ‘One ‘

The latest collective, this time cider swigging artisans from The South rising to their feet as if a Mill Wall football fan had rediscovered Lynx (sorry guys) paints a wonderful picture. The trio are brother, sister and Terran Tremewan who has found himself in a loosely fruity conundrum, but I’m sure he’s pleased as punch positioned behind the Keyboards either. However, the fact that the siblings have resolved to call themselves Zoe and Toby White Peters has probably treated Terran to a guilt-free swig of mead from the pig’s bladder.

Simian Ghost Youth

Successful Swedish musician Sebastian Arnström reprises his role as the brains behind ghostly ambient-electronica creation Simian Ghost, with their latest full length studio album under Heist or Hit Records, entitled Youth, set to be released on March 5th 2012. It’s the first full length album the band have done with this label, and Simian Ghost claim that 2012 looks to be the start of a breakthrough year for them.

Jenny Gillespie Belita

Self styled ‘atmospheric dream-pop’ folk artist Jenny Gillespie may well be one of the most unique artists to come out of the USA in recent times. Her newest album, Belita, is a tuneful mix of electro-acoustic folk music and progressive, dreamy sounds, sensuous and atmospheric. Set to be released in 2012, it’s a different, progressive sound that has the potential to capture the attention of many.

After an undeserved two decades in musical purgatory outside their native Canada, Cowboy Junkies who kicked the genre system up the arse in 1986 with ‘Whites Off Earth Now’ and follow up ‘The Trinity Sessions’ are back, having dumped major label Geffen for the indies with a repackaged repertoire. Not only are they releasing new material by the bucketload, but we can expect four albums in the near future under the guise of The Nomad Series, Volume 3 ‘Sing In My Meadow’ being the current LP under review.

Juan Zelada The Blues Remain

Following on from the success of first single ‘Breakfast In Spitalfields’, which achieved Record of the Month at Radio 2, Spaniard Juan Zelada is set to release single ‘The Blues Remain’ on the 31st of October so put the date in your diary folks because it’s pretty damn good. Zelada might be Spanish but he oozes transatlantic pop sensation from every pore.

Trips and Falls People Have to Be Told

Montreal-based trio Trips and Falls’ new album is somewhat of a disappointment. In fact – it could even be said that their band name is reflective of their music – it kind of meanders along through the album and never truly achieves momentum.

ECHO LAKE – SINK EP

You might be surprised to hear that a band who have probably played less than ten shows, and have no monstrous PR war machine backing them, are currently nestled proudly at number two in the play.com pre-order charts (enviably just behind Kylie Minogue), having ousted Example, Shutterbug and the cast of Glee from their positions. It’s impressive, no doubt – but it’s not a surprise; what I have on my desk is one of the most well written, best produced and most stunningly executed releases I have ever received – and, without a doubt, the best debut.

MERCHANDISE FOR THE MASSES

I’ve always been an advocate of that old adage of not judging a book by it’s cover, but anyone that’s ever tried knows that it’s considerably more difficult sometimes – being presented with folk-pop-acoustica duo Merchandise’s (AKA Brad Wood and Conrad Astley – no relation) new album ‘For The Masses’ is one of those times; sadly, the bright orange amateur-photoshopper thematics aren’t specific to the artwork.

LISA O PIU BEHIND THE BEND

A Swedish folk singer for whom words like bewitching and ethereal seem to have been invented for, Lisa O Piu is the kind of artist who instantly transports you to other worlds the second you hear here whispery voice. On her latest release, BEHIND THE BEND the singer/songwriter delivers a collection of songs about as achingly beautiful and dreamlike as any you've ever heard.

RUBY SUNS CINCO

Led by California born New Zealander Ryan McPhun, Ruby Suns are a band garnering quite a buzz as of late. With the likes of The Guardian and Uncut clamoring to sing their praises and released ahead of an extensive summer tour and following album, FIGHT SOFTLY released earlier in the year, CINCO is the latest single to emerge from Ruby Suns.

With obvious comparisons to recent alt-pop darlings like Animal Collective, Yeasayer, Grizzly Bear and Passion Pit, Ruby Suns mine similar musical ground here with CINCO but never quite achieve the same sense of wonder or awe. Though dealing in the same psychedelic realms and aiming for the same transcendent highs, Ruby Suns don't quite conjure the same magic, CINCO feeling a little too slight and undernourished to quite satisfy completely. There are hints of something special sparkled here and there, the odd shimmering flourish and the glimpse of a glorious melody, but McPhun and company don't quite bring it all together in the same way as their contemporaries on CINCO, a single that's ultimately painfully close to greatness, but just not quite.

With better material waiting in the wings, Ruby Suns are definitely a band to be excited about, but with CINCO they just aren't putting their best foot forward unfortunately.
